I, along with my wife Sarita, traveled to Raipur from Nagpur just the day before yesterday, following the heartbreaking news of the demise of her aunt. She was about 85, a graceful lady who had lived a full life—but her last six months were painful and fragile.

It all began with what many would call a minor incident—one slip and a fall at home in January this year. She fractured her hip joint. After her first surgery, things initially improved. But within months, the screws from the implant loosened, leading to another surgery. After that, she never truly recovered. Bedridden and gradually losing the will to carry on, despite the loving care from her sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, she eventually succumbed to a heart attack.

As I sat with relatives after the funeral, my thoughts drifted. This wasn’t a standalone case. I could recall at least a dozen elderly relatives and friends who had similar stories—small falls leading to hip fractures, then surgeries, prolonged immobility, and eventually, a rapid decline in health and spirit.
